🇲🇦✨ Perfect Weekend Escape: Tangier, Tetouan & Chefchaouen ✨🇲🇦
From Spain to Northern Morocco – A 2-Day Journey Through Culture, Coast & Color
Just across the Strait of Gibraltar, Morocco’s northern coast is an ideal weekend destination for those coming from Spain. In just 2 days, you can explore the vibrant streets of Tangier, wander through the UNESCO-listed medina of Tetouan, and experience the magical beauty of the Blue City of Chefchaouen. This itinerary blends authentic culture, photogenic towns, and scenic mountain drives — making it perfect for a short but unforgettable Moroccan getaway.
DAY 1 🕌
Arrival in Tangier → From White Walls to Blue Alleys
Arrive in Tangier, Morocco’s northern port city, by ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras or via a short flight. Tangier has long been a crossroads of civilizations, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and African culture fuses with European flair.
🏛️ Begin your day in the Tangier Medina, a maze of whitewashed walls, spice-scented alleys, and artisan shops. Visit the Kasbah Museum, perched above the sea, and enjoy sweeping views from the ancient ramparts. Nearby, the lively Grand Socco square offers a blend of colonial charm and Moroccan soul.
☕ Make a stop at the legendary Café Hafa, a century-old cliffside café overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar — a perfect place to sip mint tea while gazing toward Spain. If time allows, take a short detour to Tetouan, often called the “White Dove of Morocco”, known for its beautiful Andalusian-influenced architecture and one of the most authentic medinas in the country, recognized by UNESCO.
🏔️ Later in the afternoon, begin the scenic drive into the Rif Mountains, where blue-hued buildings begin to dot the hills — signaling your arrival in Chefchaouen, Morocco’s famous Blue City. Nestled in the mountains, Chefchaouen offers a peaceful escape filled with colorful corners, welcoming locals, and breathtaking photo opportunities at every turn. Take your time to stroll through the Plaza Uta El-Hammam, admire the Kasbah and its garden, and follow the sound of water to the tranquil Ras El Ma waterfall, just outside the medina walls.
🌙 As evening sets in, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner on a rooftop overlooking the glowing blue lanes.
Overnight in a charming riad in Chefchaouen, where blue-washed walls and mountain silence create a magical night.
DAY 2 💙
Chefchaouen → Blue Tranquility & Return to Tangier
Wake up early to experience Chefchaouen before the crowds arrive — this is when the soft morning light brings out the dreamlike shades of blue. Wander through quiet alleys, browse the local souks for handmade rugs, woven scarves, and natural soaps, or simply take in the calm atmosphere of this most photogenic city in Morocco.
📸 For an unforgettable view, hike (or drive) to the Spanish Mosque, perched on a hill overlooking the entire medina and the mountains beyond. It’s a perfect spot for sunrise or panoramic photos.
🛍️ After breakfast and some free time for shopping or relaxing, begin the journey back toward Tangier, enjoying the mountainous scenery and stopping for photos along the way. Depending on your departure schedule, you may choose to spend a final afternoon exploring Tangier’s modern Corniche, shopping in the new city, or relaxing at a beachfront café before heading to the port or airport.
🛥️ If you’re returning to Spain by ferry, make your way to Tangier Ville Port, conveniently located near the city center. For those flying out, Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport is just a short drive away. ✨
